Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)

Ben Affleck, Shannon Elizabeth, Jason Mewes
Rating: 9.0 / 10.0

The year 1994 brought the world Clerks, Kevin Smith's first film. Critics and movie-goers alike embraced two convenience store drug dealers named Jay and Silent Bob. Now it's seven years later and the two pimped out Jedi Knights have their own film.

Here's the story, Jay and his heterosexual life partner, Silent Bob, find out that the comic book based on them is being turned into a movie. That sounds good. Until they find out that punks on the internet were talking trash about them. Nothing is more important that protecting your rep. So the two go to Hollywood to wreck the film.

This is the movie I have been waiting for all summer. Did it live up to its expectations? I think so. I am a die hard Kevin Smith fan and as I understand it, this will be the last film with Jay and Silent Bob and the entire Clerks Universe. They did lots of Star Wars jokes, spoofed other classic films and brought back other Kevin Smith movie alumni like Jeff Anderson and Joey Lauren Adams.

The problem with the film is that if you weren't a fanatical Clerks fan you'd probably spend the entire time wondering why that one guy in the front with the trench coat and Daredevil shirt is laughing so hard. A casual fan wouldn't have gotten the Walt Flannagan's dog joke or understood why Holden wished he was still dating a lesbian. Okay, some things are universal.

All in all, I liked the film. There was a lot of funny stuff and some good spoofs. Charlie Average Movie-Go-Seer might not give Jay & Silent Bob the high rating I did, but they probably feel bad for any independent contracter who was working on the reconstructed Death Star in Jedi.
