Almost Famous (2000)
Almost Famous is the story of fifteen-year-old William Miller's quest to become a successful rock journalist. William's life is a constant conflict between the rebellious undertones of the rock 'n roll he adores, and the love and sense of obligation he feels towards his oppressive and utterly square mother. In the consequence-free atmosphere of the early 70's, her constant smothering and admonitions against sex and drugs could easily push him away. But keeping William on the straight and narrow path is the realization that no amount of hard partying will ever make him cool. He's destined to always be a relatively mature mind trapped in a youngster's body, hopelessly isolating him from both his peers and his idols.
Seeking to break into the exciting world of rock journalism, William finds literary guidance from Lester Bangs (Philip Seymour Hoffman), editor of the underground rock mag "Creem" and fellow un-hipster. While pursuing a story for Lester, William meets up with the entrancingly beautiful "band-aid" Penny Lane (Kate Hudson) and the upstart rockers "Stillwater", fronted by Jeff Bebe (Jason Lee) and Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup). He connects well with the band and when Rolling Stone comes calling for his services, William pitches a Stillwater article to the mag. Soon he's on an all-expense paid trip around the country, documenting the band's triumphs and struggles.
I can only think of one significant complaint about this movie: there was way too much Elton John music. It seemed like every tender moment was punctuated by Elton John. I can tolerate one or two such tunes, but this one had too many.
Other than that, Almost Famous is one of those movies that just seems to have it all. In fact, it's difficult to find anything much to say about it at all because the film does so many things so well, that it's difficult to even know where to begin. It can move from extremely funny to deeply touching and back again in the span of several minutes. Like Spinal Tap, this is a must-see for anyone who's been in a band, or has ever been moved by music at all. Which should be just about everyone. Look for a great bit part by SNL's Jimmy Fallon.
