Shaft (2000)

Samuel L. Jackson
Rating: 8.0 / 10.0

Shaft's special features are very good. There are some token cast and crew interviews, and a largely forgettable "making of" featurette that really is just the typical 15-minute infomercial promoting the film, rather than really examining the creation process. Its most redeeming moments are a five minute segment offering a glimpse of Isaac Hayes in the recording studio as he scored the film.

Also included on the disc is a music video for R. Kelly's song, "Bad Man". The video is decent, but nothing special, and the music is, well, it's R. Kelly. I'll let you make your own judgment regarding that. Seeing as how Busta Rhymes was in the movie, I'd rather have seen a video from him.

But where the special features really shine are in the theatrical trailer and the theme song video from Isaac Hayes. Both ride far on the strength of the Shaft theme music. The trailer is exciting, cool, and hella-funky, and the music video is pure "sex machine to all the chicks" attitude.

They may not be the best around, but Shaft's special features offer a good deal of bang for the buck. 8 out of 10.
