Anchorman (2004)

Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate
Rating: 9.0 / 10.0

Will Ferrell turns out his best movie to date with Anchorman. I haven't laughed this hard or this often since South Park. Absurdity reigns supreme and the quotable lines just keep rolling. If you miss this one, you're missing the funniest comedy in a long time.

Make no mistake, Anchorman is NOT "The Daily Show" on the big screen. Some may have expected it to be, especially with "Daily Show" veteran Steve Carell on the cast. The movie really just uses the newsroom as a stage for its antics. Carell's character, moron weatherman Brick Tamland, will probably catch many viewers by surprise because of how different he is from his "Daily Show" persona, but he is extremely funny nonetheless.

The film is filled with great cameos. Vince Vaughn, Luke Wilson, Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Tim Robbins, and others turn in great bit parts. Fred Willard is a bit underutilized as the news director, but Chris Parnell lends great support as his assistant.

I feel like this is a really lame review because there's not much else I can tell you without ruining all the jokes for you. The "jazz flute" scene is probably the best burst of hilarity. The "rumble" in the street is golden. The "playful banter" between Burgundy and Corningstone during the newscast credits will leave you howling. And my new automatic response at any point when I don't know what to say is now, "I love lamp."

Trust me, this one is a must-see.

I guess with My Dog Skip getting an 8.5 (thanks Ranj), you'd have to give Anchorman at least a 9 even if you hated the flick. Hmm... Muniz vs. Ferrell... need I say more?
